Mosquito Lagoon is one of Florida’s most well-known inshore saltwater fisheries, offering a unique mix of shallow water, healthy fish populations, and year-round opportunity. Located along Florida’s east coast near Titusville, Oak Hill, Edgewater, and New Smyrna Beach, Mosquito Lagoon is a world class fly fishery within a short drive from Orlando and serves as the default location for fly anglers who are visiting theme parks and want to escape for a day or two on the water.
Expansive grass flats, clear water, and a strong population of redfish make it a reliable and rewarding place to fly fish. Whether you’re new to fly fishing or an expert looking to spend time on one of Florida’s most productive inshore fisheries, the Mosquito Lagoon provides consistent opportunities and a variety of ways to enjoy a day on the water.
For those who don’t fly fish, we also offer Mosquito Lagoon conventional light tackle fishing charters.
Fly Fishing Mosquito Lagoon
Fly fishing in Mosquito Lagoon is a game played in skinny water, with a mix of sight fishing and blind casting opportunities depending on the conditions. The Mosquito Lagoon is a shallow, protected estuary made up of large open flats, seagrass beds, potholes, and shoreline structure, and we fish it all.
On calm, clear days, we spend time poling shallow flats actively looking for fish tailing, pushing wakes, or feeding. On days where visibility is poor, targeting likely areas along shorelines, potholes, and structure where fish are holding can be productive.
Accurate casts and natural presentations are always important, but the approach can range from technical and deliberate to more straightforward and opportunistic depending on the conditions.
Mosquito Lagoon is a great place for both experienced fly anglers to test their game while those newer to saltwater fly fishing can hone their skills and still find success.
Target Species In Mosquito Lagoon
Redfish
Redfish are the foundation of the Mosquito Lagoon fishery and are available year-round. They are commonly found across the grass flats and shallow edges, feeding on crabs, shrimp, and small baitfish. These fish can be targeted visually in the right conditions or by working productive water where they are holding.
Snook
Snook move into the Mosquito Lagoon during warmer months and are typically found along shorelines and structure. They are ambush predators, masters of their domain and will routinely hide in plain sight. Snook are aggressive , often rewarding well-placed casts with explosive eats and hard fights.
Tarpon
Tarpon are a seasonal bonus in the Mosquito Lagoon. While not the primary focus, they are occasionally encountered when conditions are right, especially around bait and moving water during the warmer months when they show up in all sizes (from juveniles to 100 pound adults) and feed heavily as they migrate north.
Seasonal Fly Fishing In Mosquito Lagoon
Fly fishing in Mosquito Lagoon is productive throughout the year, with seasonal changes influencing where fish are found and how they are targeted.
Winter (December – February)
Cooler water temperatures often concentrate redfish into schools. Fishing can be very consistent during stable weather, with opportunities to target big groups across the flats. Snook can occasionally be found in shallow water on the warmer days. Tarpon are encountered infrequently.
Spring (March – May)
As water temperatures rise, fish spread out and become more active. This is a great time to cover water and find feeding fish throughout the system. Redfish and snook can be found feeding on the flats and shorelines. Tarpon begin to show up and get active as temperatures rise.
Summer (June – August)
Warmer temperatures shift the focus to mornings and late afternoons as the flats get hot during periods of high sun and afternoon rain showers cool things back down later in the day. Redfish, snook, and tarpon become more active, and feed in shallow water, especially during lower light periods.
Fall (September – November)
Fall offers some of the most consistent fishing of the year. Bait is abundant, and conditions are often stable across the lagoon. Redfish and snook can be caught all over the Lagoon while some tarpon remain until things start to cool down.
